Hiring a fixer in Colombia: what to expect

A fixer is the person who makes a shoot happen on the ground: someone who knows the country, the people and the rules, and who solves problems before they reach your crew. If you are filming in Colombia for the first time, here is what a fixer does, what affects the price and how to get the most from one.

What does a fixer do?

A good fixer covers everything between your idea and the footage:

  • Pre-production and research: contributors, access, locations and story angles
  • Permits and authorizations, including drones and foreign-crew paperwork
  • Crew, casting and equipment hire
  • Travel, transport, accommodation and logistics
  • Safety planning and on-the-ground risk assessment
  • Translation and interpreting
  • Cultural guidance and introductions, so people trust the camera

Fixer or production services company?

Some jobs only need a fixer: a local who sets up interviews and gets the crew from A to B. Others need a full production services company that also handles budgets, contracts, insurance and invoicing. Fixer Colombia does both. Each of us can lead a project on his own, and on bigger shoots we work together.

When should you book?

As early as you can. A simple interview shoot can come together in days. Shoots that need public-space permits, drones, equipment imports or visas for the crew need several weeks, and busy periods book up. Even a short call at the idea stage helps: we can tell you what is realistic before you commit to dates.

What affects the cost?

  • The number of shoot days and prep days
  • Crew size and the roles you need us to hire
  • Locations, travel distances and remote access
  • Equipment, vehicles and permits
  • Security needs and risk level
  • Whether you need a fixer only or full production services

We quote per project, so you know the price before you commit. Send us your brief and we will come back with a clear estimate.

How to brief us

The more you share, the better the plan. Useful details:

  • Dates and how flexible they are
  • Locations, or the story you want to tell
  • Crew size, nationalities and equipment (including drones)
  • Format and deliverables: news, documentary, commercial, series
  • Budget range
  • Any safety or access concerns
